PANORAMIC APARTMENTS, LA MANGA DEL MAR MENOR LA MANGA
La Manga is situated in the Costa Calida (Warm Coast) in an area that has one of the most moderate climates in Europe, with on average 320 days of sunshine a year.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE (24 hours) SPRING 14-19 °C (58-66 °F ) SUMMER 22-26 °C (71-78 °F ) AUTUMN 16-23 °C (60-74 °F ) WINTER 12-13 °C (54-56 °F )
"The Strip" as it is known, is approx. 22 kms long, and separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean Sea. There are beaches stretching the whole length of the strip. There is something for all age groups in the area and yet it is not a package resort, catering for Spanish holidaymakers and people who own or rent property in the area.
The apartment is situated in a newly developing part of La Manga, directly on the canal entrance to the Thomas Maestre Marina, having wonderful views of the Mediterranean and the many yachts and boats as they pass by. Eventually there will be a deep sea marina, which will attract cruise ships as well as other craft.
The apartment is fully equipped - 1 bedroom with a double bed and a double sofa bed in the sitting room, satellite (English)TV, DVD/CD player, fridgefreezer, microwave, toaster, cooker and hob, kettle, washing machine, and full bathroom, All rooms lead onto an extra large balcony (over 20ft) overlooking the Mediterranean. A delightful view from any room but marvellous to wake up in the morning and see the glistening blue sea without getting out of bed!
It is a few minutes walk to the nearest beach and 5 minutes by car to the newly opened 9 hole pitch and put/driving range. (Appx 20euros for 9 holes inc club hire)
THE MAR MENOR The warm shallow waters of the Mar Menor make this a paradise for those keen on watersports of all descriptions It is known as a fantastic natural swimming pool with temperatures on average 5degrees higher than the Mediterranean, sometimes as high as 27 or 30 degrees in summer.Winter temperatures are cooler, but swimming on New Years day has been known! The waters have a high saline and mineral content and are recognised as being therapeutic particularly for the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis etc. People can be regularly seen gathering the The Black Mud on Abity Beach, 10mins walk from the apartment and covering their bodies in it as "open air mud therapy" Several hotels offer Mud Therapy and Thalassotherapy Services. LOCAL ACTIVITIES This is a well-placed apartment for access to some great golf courses. Other activities include cycling, fishing, horse riding, swimming, snorkelling, tennis, walking, water skiing, windsurfing and scuba diving, jet ski, canoeing, sea fishing. There are several dive sites around the area including reservation areas and wrecks. Accompanied dives and lessons are easily arranged.
Bicycles and Quad bikes can be hired locally at the marina
There is a new ferry service operating across the Mar Menor from the marina to Santiago de Ribera. A lively market is held here on a Weds. Crossings are approximately every two hours and take 20 minutes. Bicycles are permitted on board for a small extra charge.
OTHER AMENITIES
The locality also boasts an area of outstanding natural beauty where many types of birdlife can be found including the well known flamingoes which can be seen in winter at the nearby nature reserve. There are also several sites of historical interest in the area. For the more active, there is tennis, go karting, squash and boat trips.
SHOPPING
There is a bread shop in the next block and an Upper supermarket 7mins from the apartment. Approximately 1 km away near the Marina are bars, banks and a larger supermarkets, that have a very good selection of fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish. There is internet access at several bars on the marina. (Mar de Copas, Faluas and others)
There are local markets up and down the towns of the Costa Calida, the closest being that on Sundays in the Cabo de Palos area at the start of the strip, this is a popular market which attracts people from surrounding areas, offering goods from fruit and vegetables to clothes, shoes, crafts and leather goods. It is an all year round market. For the more serious shopper, the nearest large town is Cartagena, which has many shops and a Carrefour hypermarket. There is also a newly opened shopping outlet on the way to Cartagena with a Carrefour, DIY and clothes shops.
For the adventurous, there is a train service from Los Nietos to Cartagena which allows a relaxed journey taking in splendid coastal scenery before either exploring the culture or retail outlets of the city.
EATING OUT There are many bars and restaurants to choose from both at the marina and along the strip. Pacos bar is just a few minutes walk from the apartment and has a varied and reasonably priced menu. All types of cuisine are available at the marina, including local, French and Greek with fish and seafood recipes a speciality There is a Burger King restaurant at the entrance to the marina for those who like the occasional familiar "fast food".
Perhaps you might like to take advantage of the extra large balcony in the apartment which is perfect for "al fresco" breakfast, lunch or dinner whilst admiring the breathtaking view, both in winter and summer. Simple or extravagant fresh food is easily prepared in the well equipped kitchen which leads directly onto the balcony. NIGHTLIFE
Locally, Pacos Bar is a five minute walk from the apartment and has a relaxed Spanish atmosphere, also serving food. The marina provides bars to suit every taste including the young and lively and families. Manga Norte Bar at the marina entrance boasts live music on several nights a week. La Manga itself has varied and lively nightlife. It begins in Cabo de Palos, which diguises itself as a quiet fishing village by day but has a busier atmosphere by night. with some bars staying open until the early hours in peak season. This is also true of the area known as "Zocos" further down the strip which also offers a craft market in peak season. In between there are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars, with something to suit everyone. There are a number of English/Irish bars offering a "taste of home" There is also a Casino Bohemia square has bars and restaurants with a colourful evening market during the summer months. The local bus service runs 24 hourly through the summer and is reasonably priced (1euro to Cabo)
All in all, the area has something for everyone - a leisurely beach holiday, an active sporty holiday, a golfers paradise or somewhere to explore the natural attractions and culture of the Costa Calida. Summers are lively and cosmopolitan, and winters are ideal for those in search of peace and quiet. For those who want to get out and about, cultural Cartagena and Murcia are both within an hours drive whilst Benidorm is further north within two hours.
Nearest local airport is Murcia (San Javier) which is a 40 min drive or Alicante (90 mins). Foe those who prefer to be picked up, taxis or "pick up" services can be recommended.
