Description of Villa: |
A detached villa in an elevated position with wonderful views of sea and countryside. The smooth rock bay of Aiguafreda is a few minutes by car and here you will find a diving centre and waterfront restaurants. Sandy beaches are just a little further away.
This is an extract from The Sunday Times Travel section, 9 March 2008, listing Aiguafreda as one of the top ten beaches in the world! “My favourite beach is called Cala d’Aiguafreda and it doesn’t have sand. It has flat rocks as warm as electric blankets and tiny rock pools that make perfect wine coolers. Wrapped in pine woods and sheltered from the tramontane wind, it smells intoxicatingly of ozone and resin and is lapped by waters as clear as Bombay Sapphire. That’s nothing special in these parts. The beaches of the Baix Emporda, as this part of the Costa Brava is known, belong in a superleague of their own; but, for my money, tiny Aiguafreda is number one. That’s due in no small part to the fabulous Hostal Sa Rascassa, located in heavenly isolation a few steps from the beach. Owned by the ebullient Oscar Gorriz, this simple, stylish place (recently voted one of Spain’s best decorated hotels) with a candlelit open-air restaurant, a beach bar and a Wednesday night music club, is a diamond set in an emerald forest beside a sapphire sea”. [Chris Haslam]
Accommodation: Newly refurbished to a very good standard, the villa has surrounding grounds and a large swimming pool with terrace. The living area also leads to a dining terrace where you can enjoy the views and peace of this beautiful region. The villa is approached by private drive and is a few minutes away from the charming medieval hillside town of BEGUR with its endless choice of superb restaurants, bars, cafes and shops.
A front door leads into the spacious split level living and dining area with ceiling fans and glass doors to the terrace with a BBQ. Very light and attractively furnished with sofa and easy chairs. This is an ideal get away from it all location with uninterrupted views.
The accommodation is well laid out with a double bedroom on one side of the living area approached by a couple of steps. A twin bedroom on the other side of the living area, also approached by a couple of steps. There is a bathroom with bath and shower over. An open kitchen with washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, oven, hob. The garden is mainly laid to terrace with many attractive shrubs and climbers giving much colour to the surrounds.
Local Activities: Tennis and horseriding- 5 mins drive. Beach activities, snorkelling, diving- 10min drive. The beaches in this region are superb. All sandy with blue flags and mostly a shallow entrance making it safe for little ones. There is rarely overcrowding as there is such a choice of beaches and some are relatively unknown by tourists. This area attracts many spaniards from Barcelona and other parts of Spain, many of whom have holiday homes here.
Go-karting for kids and adults-10mins drive. Water park- 20mins drive. Zoo- 10mins drive. Cycling- bykes can be hired in Palafrugell. Golf- many golf courses within 10-20 mins drive. The house manual gives details of all the courses in the local vicinity. Sailing- 10mins drive. There is a sailing club at Sa Riera and kayaks and pedallos for hire. Kayaks also at Calella.
Cultural activities- all over the region: Figueres- Dalis museum- 40mins drive. Medieval towns- 15-20 mins drive- Peratallada- a must to visit. Restaurants- too numerous to mention. Begur has a very good choice as do the coastal villages. Shops- an interesting selection of very good shops selling clothes, jewellery, etc. Food- excellent speciality shops in Begur for fish and meat plus very good supermarkets.
Walking- this is wonderful walking country, especially out of season when it is not so hot. The tourist office has a map showing popular walks. Skiing- within 3 hours you can be on the slopes in Andorra. Night life- plenty if you want it but there is not a string of discos here. Mainly late night cellar bars with music, some with dancing. There is a club in Begur and one just outside, not far from the villa but well away from everything and everyone! The main square has entertainment in the high season with a mixture of traditional and modern music and dancing. Wonderful to just sit and watch! About the area ~ This is the unspoilt COSTA BRAVA or CATALUNYA which is free from large Tour Operated holidays and where most of the properties are owned by Barcelonians. It is rarely overcrowded and has retained real Spanish charm without a souvenir shop in sight! This is an area you will want to return to again and again.... Every day there will be a different place of interest to visit, be it a cultural pursuit or another sundrenched sandy cove with clear water to while away the day. All the coastal resorts here have waterfront restuarants, cafes and shops and it is a real pleasure to wander the little streets around the front and enjoy the spectacular scenery that this rugged coastline offers. Development here is mainly villas as the terrain does not allow for large apartment blocks and the coastline remains intact with some wonderful coastal path walks.
There are many other places of interest including Salvador Dali`s castle at PUBOL and his amazing museum at Figueres, where you cannot fail to be drawn in by his diverse art. At La Bisbal the streets are littered with ceramic shops and there is also an antique centre. Girona is a wonderful small city to visit, known as mini-Barcelona, with its own charming ramblas and interesting shops and pavement restaurants. Barcelona, if you crave city life, is one hour by train from Flaca (20mins by car from Begur) and here you can leave your car and get right into the centre of Barcelona by train.
The border of France is approximately one hour away but you will find all you need and more in this beautiful and charming unspoilt region of Spain, Costa Brava, |
