A lovely townhouse in a quiet part the old town of Almuñecar, very close to beaches, shops, markets, restaurants and all amenities.

Description of Townhouse:

The house is in a quiet part of the old town of Almunecar, a five minute walk from the beach and very close also to shops and restaurants. It sleeps four/five (one double room and one twin room, there is also a single put you up). The house is very nicely furnished. As well as a fitted kitchen on the ground floor there is a utility kitchen which opens on to one of the two terraces from where there are views over the town, mountains and sea. The house is next to the botanical park which has a vast collection of sub tropical plants mainly from Africa and South America. Behind and high above the house is the San Miguel castle which is perched on a headland that separates Almuñecar’s two main beaches. The tourist office is just down the road. As well as the local supermarket there is a daily market nearby for fresh fish, meat, vegetables, fruit etc. The local baker is just 2 minutes walk from the house.

Almuñecar is a small coastal town on the Costa Tropical nestling between the mountains and the sea. It has become extremely popular in recent years although is still largely undeveloped compared to it’s neighbours on the Costa del Sol. Steeped in history the town has a very interesting Moorish castle and the remains of a Roman fish factory and newly excavated Phoenician ruins. This part of the south coast of Spain earned the name ‘Costa Tropical’ because of the unique combination of the mountains, forests and sea. These features combine to create a micro-climate that tempers the extreme heat of the summer months but maintains a warmer temperature during the winter allowing lush tropical plants to thrive all year round. There is also a tropical bird park with many rare species.

There are all kinds of shops from small specialist craft shops and boutiques, to large supermarkets. There is a huge weekly outdoor market (Friday) which draws traders from far and wide. Here you can buy almost anything. On the first Sunday of each month there is a flea (antique) market where you can pick up rare and interesting artefacts at very sensible prices compared to those at home.

The beaches are clean and uncrowded and are dotted with ‘Cherinquitos’ serving excellent fresh food. Like all of the bars in the town, they follow the local custom of providing fresh and tasty ‘tapas’ when you visit, even just for a drink. As well as the many fine beaches there is a large water park open during the summer months and of course, many water sports, including scuba diving are on offer. There is also the opportunity to try paragliding and horseriding nearby. The area around Almuñecar is ideal for walkers, a ten minute drive to the foothills will lead to as many trails as one is prepared to follow through the Chirimoya and Nispola orchards and pine forests.

The town comes alive at night and the boutiques and craft shops in the old town offer lots of interesting shopping opportunities for clothes and souvenirs. There are several renowned flamenco shows in the area where you can enjoy local speciality food and drink while being entertained by authentic Spanish musicians and dancers.

There are many local festivals throughout the year. The Spanish custom of conveying their saints and religious treasures through the villages and towns supported by beautifully dressed figures to the accompaniment of bands and fireworks are truly spectacular. These fiestas can last for days and bring a carnival atmosphere to the town. Throughout the summer months Almunecar also provides free entertainment in it’s open-air concert areas and parks.

Nearby
North of Almuñecar lies Granada (approximately 45 minutes by car) which can be reached through the mountains via the ‘calle cabra’ (the old goat road) or along the main highway. Steeped in history and renowned for the Alhambra. It is an absolute must for any visitor to this part of Spain. A short detour en-route to Granada takes you to the Alpujarran villages of Bubion, Trevelez and Capileira in the Sierra Nevada. Each village is situated high up in the mountains and offers delicious local food and hospitality and wonderful local craft shops. The local wines are delicious and can be purchased cheaply in large 2 and 5 litre bottles. On this route you will also pass the newly completed dam, one of the largest in the Europe, which was commissioned to control the water supply to the Costa Tropical throughout the dry summer months.

During most of the year skiing is also possible on the northern slopes of the Sierra Nevada approx. 1hr 30mins from Almunecar.

Nerja, by now almost an English stronghold, is about 20 mins away to the west of Almuñecar. Famous for its vast cave systems and the biggest stalactite pillar in the world. Nerja also holds the biggest and best Sunday antique market you will find in the area where prices are a fraction of those at home.

La Herradura (10 mins from Almunecar) is a quiet little coastal village nestling between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. Along the beach front here there are many excellent restaurants, the most famous of which is ‘El Chambao de Joaquin’. At the weekend the chefs prepare a giant paella on an outside oven and crowds gather to feast and enjoy a spectacular flamenco evening.
